A diverse, multicultural team of psychologists, counselors, and social workers offering trauma-informed care for depression, anxiety, grief, abuse, and family needs.
Faith-based counseling in North Philadelphia
The Place of Refuge provides professional, trauma-informed, culturally-relevant counseling to the neighborhoods of Philadelphia's inner city — serving those in need regardless of the ability to pay.
Who we are
A pioneering faith-based nonprofit behavioral health center, bringing professional care and compassion to individuals, families, and communities affected by trauma.
A diverse, multicultural team of psychologists, counselors, and social workers offering trauma-informed care for depression, anxiety, grief, abuse, and family needs.
We equip local pastors, caregivers, and lay leaders with training, support groups, seminars, and a lay-counseling program to help the hurting in their communities.
We serve regardless of the ability to pay. We accept Pennsylvania HealthChoices Medicaid plans and offer a sliding scale for out-of-network clients.
Our mission
In North Philadelphia, more than 40% of residents live at or below the poverty level, facing violence, chronic stress, and trauma with few places to turn. Community services are stretched thin, and none specialize in trauma treatment.
The Place of Refuge exists to fill that gap — providing professional, culturally-sensitive, community-based mental health services, and partnering with local leaders to build a stronger, healthier city.
